The D&C

I never fully realized how important it might be to have a significant knowledge of the book of the Doctrine and Covenants until I spent 12 days on a bus, driving through New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Iowa and Missouri touring church history sites.  Previous to this incredible trip, in my mind it seemed totally ok to only study the Book of Mormon and stop there.  My heart had never been open to the importance of the Doctrine and Covenants.  In Quincy, Illinois and Kirkland, Ohio I had distinct impressions that I needed to study "something" more.  I didn't know what that "something" was?  I didn't dawn on me until a couple months later...the D&C!  Duh!  So, I have decided to read and study the D&C.  It may take me quite some time, but I'll do it.

Having said that...the scripture that impressed me most this week was from the modern day prophet, Joseph Fielding Smith:
my D&C student manual!
I have a 'student manual'...
...I LOVE it :]
My favorite part is right at the first when President Smith states: "In my judgement there is no book on earth yet come to man as important as the book known as the Doctrine and Covenants.."  I wondered why?  He goes on to explain that the D&C is revelation for modern times.  The Bible, Book of Mormon, Pearl of Great Price...they are revelation and doctrine given for and in ancient times.  I GET IT!

I studied the Introduction to the Doctrine and Covenants this week.  It's pretty intense.  The testimony of the 12 apostles (at the time of the restoration) is printed in the Introduction:
"We give this testimony to the world!" Wow!  ....Anyway, I'm excited to study this great book.  I hope it strengthens my testimony and answers questions I have bouncing around in my mind regarding the gospel.

Sunny side up...even in the smog!
